Parallel Parking Guide for Alberta Students

Start with safe setup

Choose a legal practice area, signal, check mirrors, shoulder check, and line up beside the vehicle or space. Good setup makes the rest of the parking movement easier.

Move slowly

Parallel parking is not a race. Students should control speed with gentle braking and steering so they can correct position without panic.

Use reference points carefully

Reference points can help, but every vehicle is different. Students should learn the method in their practice vehicle and understand why each step matters.

Check around the vehicle

Observation matters during parking. Check mirrors, blind spots, pedestrians, cyclists, and traffic before and during the maneuver.

Practice corrections

Students should learn how to adjust if they are too far from the curb, too angled, or not centered in the space. A calm correction is better than rushing.

Use lesson time for feedback

An instructor can help students identify whether the issue is setup, steering timing, speed, observation, or confidence.
