Shoulder checks are easy to forget when students feel nervous. Practice them before lane changes, turns, pulling away from the curb, parking, and moving around obstacles.
Students should scan left, right, ahead, crosswalks, signs, pedestrians, and other vehicles. Looking only at the vehicle directly ahead is not enough.
Driving too fast, too slow, or failing to adjust for school zones, playground zones, weather, hills, and traffic can all create problems during a road test.
Students should practice parking slowly and safely. Rushing parallel parking, forgetting hill parking steps, or failing to check surroundings can hurt test confidence.
A safe lane change needs a signal, mirror check, shoulder check, gap choice, steady speed, and smooth movement. Late decisions are a common issue.
A small mistake should not become a chain of mistakes. Students can practice breathing, listening carefully, recovering calmly, and continuing to drive safely.
